Maya Angelou and 58 West 120th Street
“The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned,” Maya Angelou once said. Now, a piece of the poet extraordinaire’s personal history is up for grabs, with her Harlem brownstone set to hit the market.
Angelou, who died in 2014, renovated the four-story, 20-foot-wide house at 58 West 120th Street and turned it into a home with high ceilings and five bedrooms, five full baths and three half baths. It was, according to the New York Times, quite the dance party venue, with revelers including Oprah.
Built in 1909, the townhouse, which is asking $5.1 million, has roughly 5,500 square feet of space, including a finished basement. There is also a backyard garden off the kitchen, according to listing broker Valon Nikci of Link NY Realty.
The poet extraordinaire and civil rights activist bought the brownstone sight unseen in 2002, according to the Times, but didn’t move in until 2004. [NYT] — Dusica Sue Malesevic
