You don’t have to leave town if you’re looking for a late summer getaway. You could just rent this restored Rockaway Beach bungalow, available on Airbnb for $130 a night. The two-bedroom pad, which the hosts call a “classic old bungalow,” fits five guests. Lots of windows and a double-height ceiling mean the space has a lofty vibe, but mostly it’s a charming and cozy place to shack up in New York City’s surf town.

There’s a rich history behind the bungalows of the Rockaways. Most were built in the 1920s using pattern book designs that incorporated uniform facades, compact interiors, integrated porches and exposed rafters. The bungalows were popular through the 1950s, when the neighborhood’s heyday as a beach resort started to end. In the 1980s, when crime in the area was on the rise, many were demolished. Today, enough still stand–even after the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy–to make this feel like a tight-knit beach community.

The double-height space once you enter the bungalow is framed with wooden beams. There’s a sleeping loft above the kitchen.

This view of the living room and its pull-out sofa is from the lofted bedroom above.

The bedrooms aren’t particularly fancy, but who needs that when you’ll be out at the beach all day?

Fronting the bungalow is a furnished deck, the perfect place to hang after a day at Rockaway Beach. Who could ask for much more when it comes to a NYC staycation?
