Extell Development Company has filed plans to demolish the Chelsea building that housed the Red Door music venue founded by one-time Rolling Stones manager, Giorgio Gomelsky.

The developer closed on the $9.125 million purchase of 140 West 24th Street on January 18 and immediately requested DOB demolition permits for the three-story property, according to public records.
Extell also owns the building next door, at 142 West 24th, which it is currently in the process of demolishing.
Extell declined to comment on their plans for the two buildings, although numerous published reports have suggested the company is planning a hotel for the Chelsea site.

Public records show 140 West 24th Street was sold for $9.125 million by Hilda Kobler. Built in 1920, the building contains approximately 4,000 s/f and is buildable to 18,250 s/f. The transaction cleared the way for Extell to acquire additional air rights from 136-138 West 24th Street. 140 West 24th Street housed The Red Door public art space from 1978 to 2015.
The off-market sale was handled by Halstead Property brokers Chris Halliburton and Brandon Himmel, neither of whom had any comment.
