DeSimone Consulting Engineers of New York City has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companiesâ (ACEC) 49th annual Engineering Excellence Awards for the structural design of 170 Amsterdam in Manhattan.

The 20-story, 236,000 s/f residential high-rise features a concrete exoskeleton with a diagrid design.
Developed using advanced modeling technology, the exoskeleton moves the buildingâs structure to the exterior, and allows for more usable, column-free interior spaces. The result is increased flexibility for floor plans and tenants.
A specialized concrete mix for the exoskeleton gives the material the appearance of limestone.
The formwork for the round, crossed column shapes involved an intricate fiberglass system with multiple units that were tightly connected together to achieve maximum re-use and economy. ACEC recognized 151 projects throughout the nation and the world as pre-eminent engineering achievements, and all were eligible for top national honors.
Judging for this yearâs awards â known industry-wide as the Academy Awards of the engineering industry â took place in February, conducted by a panel of more than 30 engineers, architects, government officials, media members, and academia.
Award criteria included uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, complexity, and success in achieving goals.
Winners of the top national awards â including 16 Honor Awards, eight Grand Awards and the prestigious âGrand Conceptor Awardâ for the yearâs most outstanding overall engineering achievement â will be revealed at the annual Engineering Excellence Awards Dinner and Gala, a black-tie event to be held Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.
The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) is the business association of Americaâs engineering industry, representing more than 5,000 independent engineering firms and more than 325,000 professionals throughout the US.
